Garry Johnson

Garry was born in San Diego and grew up in Downey California. Garry’s interest in photography began while a student at Compton College where he won the Jean Landon Taylor award for outstanding photography. He graduated from Compton College with a major in photography. He went on to study photography at Art Center School in Los Angeles and then began his career as an industrial photographer before attending Cal Poly Pomona where he earned a BS degree in Engineering. He worked for many years as an engineer at Rockwell in Anaheim before moving to the San Jose Area where he worked for Lockheed in Sunnyvale. His career path required highly technical metallurgical and photographic skills. He won many photographic awards in metallography, both film and digital and published technical papers on his work. In 1996 he retired and moved with his wife to Morro Bay where he plans to stay.

Garry has many interests in Morro bay, especially taking pictures of birds from his kayak in the Morro Bay Estuary. He has taught several digital photography classes through the Cal Poly University Osher program. He is an active docent at the Natural History Museum where he is part of the Nature Photo Walk program. He helps the Estuary Program with their plankton pulls and provides them with pictures. He also has been the photographer for the SLO Botanical Garden, initiating the practice of having digital pictures of the plants they sell. Digital photography is his greatest passion and he participates in the San Luis Camera Club, San Luis Obispo Art Association, Morro Bay Art, and Cayucos Art association. His pictures are on display in several locations around town.
