Night Photography, Part 1
with Howard Ignatius, Garry Johnson and Jerry Kirkhart
Friday 5-9pm, Morro Bay Community Center and Field Location TBD, capacity 45. Part I is not a prerequisite for Part II.
The workshop is designed for photographers at any skill level and is primarily geared towards digital photography, with emphasis on Lightroom and Photoshop post-processing. We will meet two sessions, the first to discuss how to take night photographs and the second on how to process them.
The first night we will begin with a discussion of the equipment that you may find helpful when taking night and low light photographs, along with techniques and tips that can improve your results. Then we will spend a couple of hours taking photos at Morro Rock, weather permitting. If it is foggy, an alternate location inland will be announced at the lecture. Suggested equipment requirements for the photo-shoot are:
1. Camera: Digital (preferably DSLR) , capable of exposure times from 1-30 Sec. Your battery should be fully charged.
2. Tripod
3. Remote Control or in-camera Self-Timer function
4. Lens: Zoom with a reasonably wide range, such as 18-200mm is preferred. However, 17-35, 24-70, 70-200 will also work.
If you only have prime lenses, bring something in the 50mm range and a telephoto around 200mm or greater.
5. Flashlight
In the second session, Howard will discuss workflow using night images -- including how to load the images you have taken into Lightroom, review and post-process them using both Lightroom and Photoshop CS4 (and CS3) software. He will then share advanced processing techniques such as multi-image night panoramas, star trails and adding moons to your moonless images.
For reasons of safety, inclement weather may cause postponement or cancellation of outdoor events.
