The Elfin Forest

with Jerry Kirkhart

Saturday, 10/24, 2-3:30pm.

The "Elfin Forest" is about 90 acres in size and is located in Los Osos. It is so named because of the short stature of the California Live Oaks which are centuries old but can only be up to 20 feet in sheltered areas and only 4 feet near the tallest ridge line. It's plant communities include coastal brackish marsh, riparian woodland fringe, pygmy oak woodland, maritime chaparral, coastal dune scrub, and oak and manzanita complex. There are 19 labeled stations to observe and some 187 bird species, 131 Arthropod species, and some 200 plant species. (Some are unique to this special area). This is indeed a very special area.

The "Elfin Forest" is wheelchair accessible and an easy hike which drops some 125' from the highest point. Meet at the north end of 16th street. (You may have to park on Santa Ysabel and walk a block). Parking is somewhat limited. Macro lenses or wide angle lenses would be best unless you are trying for birds, then you need a long lens. Remember, this will be in October, and the majority of birds are not here at this time. There are fall bloomers in the flower department, and some fauna too. Very nice views.

For reasons of safety, inclement weather may cause postponement or cancellation of outdoor events.
